random winter thoughts

So, now that we are deep in winter, stuck indoors for hours on end, I've solved most of the world's problems. Here's my solutions.

1. Major League Baseball needs to come clean. The Yankees have the largest payroll in the league, and the highest profile admitted steroid users. Yet, not one Yankee has served a days suspension. Perception has met reality: we all thought pro wrestling was fake, and the confirmation that it actually is just 'sports entertainment' told us what we already knew. Can the same be said for baseball? If the MLB doesn't act quickly, the conclusion is inescapable: the game is juiced and false.

2. I support President Obama, but we shouldn't bail out the automakers. If the government gives GM $20 billion, will that convince you to buy a gas guzzler? Of course not. Until the government forces the automakers to make a better, more fuel efficient product, no one will buy. It seems to me to be an easy trade for GM: retool and make better cars, keep the factories busy, and the money is yours. The President needs to make this clear.

3. The President also needs to make 2 things clear about our silly wars: bring the troops home from Iraq AND Afghanistan. There's nothing left to be accomplished in my view. It also seems that everyday Iraquis and Afghanis don't want us there anyways. Want to pay for the stimulus deals: end the war. Same goes for the American Gulag known as Guantanamo. It's just not the American way to imprison people without charge and without trial. If real criminals are there, and surely many of them are, try them and imprison them IF found guilty. If not, let them free.

4. lastly, I'm reading every book by Jean-Philippe Toussaint.
